Why old pieces struggle here

Century Homes, Hard Winters

Antique leather furniture restoration Chicago owners ask us about usually traces back to the same three pressures.

Radiator heat

Greystones and vintage apartments still run steam heat for half the year. Hide that is already decades old loses what oil it has left and starts to crack along every fold.

Crack repair

Humid summers

Lake air swings from damp to dry. Old glue joints and stitching move with it, which is why seams open and buttons pull loose on pieces that sat quietly for years.

Seam repair

Inherited, not bought

Many antiques here came down through a family in Oak Park, Hyde Park or the North Shore. They were never meant to be replaced, so the repair has to respect the original.

Questions

Antique Leather Furniture Restoration Chicago FAQ

Will restoration lower the value of my antique?
Our goal is to keep as much of the original hide, frame and stitching as possible and only replace what has failed. If the piece is collectible, ask an appraiser before any work starts, and we will follow their guidance.
Can you restore it inside my home?
Yes. In Chicago we work on site, so cleaning, crack repair, color, stitching and button work happen in your room. If a job needs a workshop, we tell you before you book.
Why has my old sofa cracked so much lately?
Old leather has already lost much of its natural oil, and months of dry winter heat take more. The finish then splits along arms and seat fronts. Regular conditioning slows it down.
Do you match the original color?
Yes. We tint against your own leather in daylight and build the color in thin coats, keeping the patina that makes an antique look its age rather than repainting it flat.
How do I get a price?
Send three or four photos, including one of the underside, to office@leatherrestorepro.com or through the free estimate form. Antique leather furniture restoration Chicago quotes start from those pictures.
